Wegovy Complete Guide: Weight Loss, Doses & Side Effects

Wegovy gets talked about everywhere right now, from doctors’ offices to group chats, and most of what people say is half right. So let’s sort out what’s actually true.

It’s a once-weekly injection (and, since early 2026, a daily pill) that turns down your appetite so eating less feels easier instead of like a daily fight. It’s for adults living with obesity, or with overweight plus a health problem tied to weight. It isn’t a shortcut, and it isn’t for everyone.

Below you’ll find how it works, what the doses look like, what kind of weight loss is realistic, which side effects to expect, and what you’ll pay.

Wegovy in 30 seconds

  • What it is: a prescription weight-management medicine (the drug is semaglutide). You take it as a weekly injection or a daily pill.
  • Injection doses: you begin at 0.25 mg a week and move up every 4 weeks, usually landing on 2.4 mg. A higher 7.2 mg dose exists for some people.
  • Typical results: around 15% of body weight over 68 weeks on 2.4 mg, alongside diet and activity changes.
  • US cash price (Oct 2026): injection $199 for the first two fills if you’re new, then $349. The pill runs $149 to $299 depending on dose. List price is about $1,349.
  • Common side effects: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation, mostly in the first weeks.

What Is Wegovy and How Does It Work?

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk. Your gut already makes a hormone called GLP-1 after meals. It tells your brain you’ve had enough, slows how quickly your stomach empties, and helps keep blood sugar steady. Semaglutide mimics it, only it sticks around far longer.

What that feels like in practice: you get hungry less often, you feel full sooner, and the constant mental chatter about food tends to quiet down. People often call that last part “food noise.”

In the US, it’s approved for weight management. It’s also approved to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with obesity who already have heart disease. The injection is cleared for teens aged 12 and up too. You need a prescription, and the plan is always medicine plus a lower-calorie diet plus more movement.

Wegovy Injection vs Wegovy Pill

For a long time, the pen was the only choice. Now there’s a tablet too, so you can pick the format that suits your life.

The pill comes with a routine. Take it first thing on an empty stomach with a small sip of plain water (up to 4 oz or 120 ml), then wait at least 30 minutes before food or drink. Your prescribing information has the exact rules.

So which one? If needles make you wince, the pill is the obvious pick. If you’d rather think about your medicine once a week, or you may need the higher dose later, the pen makes more sense. Your prescriber can help you weigh it up.

Wegovy Weight Loss: What the Research Shows

The big trial behind the drug is called <a href=”https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2032183″ target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer”>STEP 1</a>. It followed adults with obesity for 68 weeks. Everyone got lifestyle support, and the group on 2.4 mg lost about 15% of their body weight on average. The placebo group lost about 2.4%.

Percentages are hard to picture, so here’s the math. At 100 kg (220 lb), 15% is about 15 kg (33 lb). At 90 kg (200 lb), you’re looking at roughly 13.5 kg (30 lb). Those are averages, though. Some people lose far more. Some lose less. The scale also doesn’t tell the whole story, so try our body fat calculator every few weeks to see what’s really changing.

The higher 7.2 mg dose (called Wegovy HD) was approved in March 2026. In the STEP UP trial, people who stayed on treatment lost around 21% over 72 weeks. More medicine also means more side effects, so it’s generally for people who handle 2.4 mg well and still need more.

Three things worth knowing before you set expectations:

  • It’s slow. One study saw about 2% lost in the first four weeks. The big changes build over months.
  • Responses vary. A minority of people lose less than 5%.
  • Stopping often means regaining. In a follow-up of STEP 1, people who came off the drug got back roughly two-thirds of what they’d lost within a year.

That last one is the catch nobody loves. Think of it as a long-term tool, not a quick fix. If you’re curious about timelines in general, see how long it takes to lose 100 pounds.

Wegovy Doses: The Step-by-Step Schedule

Wegovy
Wegovy doses chart showing weekly injection steps from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg and optional 7.2 mg

Nobody begins at a full dose. You climb a ladder, and the slow pace is there to go easy on your stomach.

Injection schedule

WeeksWeekly dose
1 to 40.25 mg
5 to 80.5 mg
9 to 121 mg
13 to 161.7 mg
17 onward2.4 mg (recommended) or 1.7 mg
Optional7.2 mg, only after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg and if your prescriber agrees

That first 0.25 mg step isn’t meant to move the scale much. It simply lets your body get used to the medicine. If you feel rough, your prescriber can keep you on a dose for longer before stepping up.

Pill schedule

The tablet starts at 1.5 mg a day for 30 days  for the full tablet), then goes to 4 mg, then 9 mg, then 25 mg from day 91. If 25 mg doesn’t sit well with you, a prescriber may switch you to the 1.7 mg injection.

Missed doses and pen habits

Rotate where you inject each week. If you miss a dose, don’t double up the next one. The leaflet in your pen box explains the catch-up timing, and your pharmacist will happily talk you through it.

Wegovy Side Effects: What’s Common and What’s Serious

The usual suspects

Most issues are digestive, and they tend to appear as the dose climbs. In STEP 1, about 44% of people on the drug had nausea, about 30% had diarrhea, about 25% vomited, and about 23% were constipated. Headache, tiredness, bloating, belching, and stomach pain show up too.

For most people, this settles within a few weeks. Some people also notice extra hair shedding during rapid weight loss. We cover that in our guide on semaglutide and hair loss. The 7.2 mg dose also brings more cases of dysesthesia, which is an odd skin sensation like tingling or tenderness.

The serious stuff

There’s a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors, which appeared in rodent studies. Nobody knows if the same thing happens in people, but you shouldn’t use it if you or a close relative has had medullary thyroid carcinoma, or if you have a condition called MEN 2.

Less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder trouble, dehydration that harms the kidneys, low blood sugar (mainly if you also take diabetes medicine), and mood changes. Get medical help quickly if you have severe stomach pain that won’t go away, with or without vomiting, or any sign of an allergic reaction.

Ways to make the stomach stuff easier

  • Eat smaller portions and stop at “comfortable,” not “stuffed.”
  • Skip very greasy, fried, or sugary food, especially around dose-increase days.
  • Sip fluids all day instead of chugging.
  • Stay upright for a while after meals.
  • Tell your prescriber early if it won’t settle. Slowing the step-ups is a normal fix.

Wegovy Price in 2026: What You’ll Actually Pay

The list price is about $1,349 a month in the US. Hardly anyone should pay that. If you pay cash through Novo Nordisk’s NovoCare Pharmacy, the numbers look like this:

OptionCash price per month
Injection, first two fills (new patients, through 31 Dec 2026)$199
Injection, standard doses after that$349
HD 7.2 mg injection$399
Pill, 1.5 mg$149
Pill, 4 mg$199 (the $149 offer ended 31 Aug 2026)
Pill, 9 mg and 25 mg$299

With commercial insurance and the manufacturer’s savings card, some people pay $25 or less. Coverage swings wildly between plans, and Medicare and Medicaid follow their own rules. Some telehealth partners also sell 3-, 6-, and 12-month plans for roughly $249 to $289 a month for the injection.

Wegovy vs Ozempic: both are semaglutide, but Wegovy is the weight-management brand and goes to a higher dose. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes. Don’t swap one for the other on your own.

Living outside the US? Prices change by country and by what your health system covers. In the UK, for example, NHS access is limited to specialist weight services, and private prices differ between pharmacies. Ask a local pharmacist for today’s figure. And be careful with suspiciously cheap online sellers, because fake semaglutide is out there.

Eating Well on Wegovy: Protein, Hydration and Snacks

Wegovy

When you eat less, every bite counts for more. Protein helps you hold on to muscle as the weight comes off. Fiber and fluids keep things moving. Lifting weights a couple of times a week helps a lot too, and so does everyday movement (here’s how many steps a day to lose weight). For a longer list of what to eat and avoid,

Five snacks that work when your appetite is small (calories are approximate):

  1. Plain nonfat Greek yogurt, 170 g (6 oz): about 100 kcal and roughly 17 g protein.
  2. One hard-boiled egg (50 g): about 75 kcal and 6 g protein.
  3. Low-fat cottage cheese, 1/2 cup (113 g): about 90 kcal and 12 g protein.
  4. Shelled edamame, 1/2 cup (about 80 g): about 95 kcal and 9 g protein.
  5. Cucumber slices (100 g / 3.5 oz) with 2 tbsp hummus: about 85 kcal, plus fiber and water.

Set that beside a 28 g (1 oz) bag of chips: around 150 kcal and almost no protein. Swaps like these add up quietly.
