How Your Daily Water Target is Calculated

Base intake: 35ml per kg of bodyweight
Climate addition: 0ml (cool) to 750ml (hot & humid)
Exercise addition: ~350ml per 30 minutes of exercise

A 70kg person in a moderate climate who exercises for 30 minutes needs approximately: (70 × 35) + 250 + 350 = 3,050ml (3.1 litres) per day. Note that food also contributes approximately 20% of daily water intake, so the body's total water requirement is partially met through solid food.

During exercise, the body loses water through sweat β€” a rate that can range from 0.5 litres per hour in mild conditions to over 2 litres per hour during intense exercise in heat. For sessions under 60 minutes, water is sufficient. For sessions over 60 minutes, particularly in heat, an electrolyte source (sodium, potassium, magnesium) becomes important to prevent hyponatraemia β€” a dangerous drop in blood sodium caused by drinking large amounts of plain water without electrolyte replacement.

The "8 × 8" rule (eight 8oz glasses per day) is a rough guideline with limited scientific backing. Individual needs vary significantly with bodyweight, climate, and activity level. Our calculator provides a personalised estimate based on your specific profile rather than a one-size-fits-all number.
Does coffee count toward daily water intake?
Yes. Moderate caffeine intake (up to 400mg/day) does not cause net fluid loss in habitual coffee drinkers. Coffee and tea do count toward your daily fluid total, though plain water remains the best primary hydration source.
Can you drink too much water?
