What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that is composed of fat mass, expressed as a percentage. Unlike BMI β which only considers height and weight β body fat percentage directly measures body composition, making it a far more accurate indicator of health and fitness status. Two people can have an identical BMI but very different body fat percentages depending on their muscle mass.
Your body contains two types of fat: essential fat (required for normal physiological function, including hormone production, organ protection, and nerve function) and storage fat (accumulated energy reserves). Essential fat is approximately 3β5% in men and 10β13% in women β below these levels, serious health consequences occur.

How to Take Accurate Measurements
- Measure at the end of a normal exhale β not after sucking in or pushing out
- Keep the tape parallel to the floor β not angled up or down
- Tape should be snug but not compressing β it should not leave an indent
- Take two measurements and use the average for each site
- Measure at the same time each day β ideally morning, before eating or drinking

The US Navy Circumference Method β How It Works
Men: BF% = 86.010 × log(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log(height) + 36.76
Women: BF% = 163.205 × log(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log(height) − 78.387
This formula was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984 for the US Navy and has been validated in multiple studies. It typically has an error margin of 3β4 percentage points compared to DEXA scanning β significantly better than BMI-based estimates of body fat.
Limitations and More Accurate Alternatives
No field measurement method is perfectly accurate. The circumference method can be affected by measurement error, body shape variation, and individual differences in fat distribution. For greater accuracy, consider:
- DEXA scan: Gold standard β measures bone, fat, and lean mass separately. Accurate to 1β2%. Available at sports medicine clinics and some gyms.
- Hydrostatic weighing: Highly accurate but requires full submersion in water β limited availability.
- Skinfold calipers: Trained technicians can achieve 3β4% accuracy with proper technique.
- Bioelectrical impedance (BIA): Common in bathroom scales and gym equipment. Less accurate than circumference methods β highly affected by hydration status.
